Turku and the Spöring Memorial Turku, the oldest city and - under its old Swedish name Åbo - formerly the capital of the Swedish Duchy of Finland, is today a busy ferry-port of some 170.000 inhabitants, set on the banks of the River Aura at the south-western corner of Finland. Considerable confusion exists among many people with Finnish ancestry regarding how names are used in Finland and how they should be recorded. This document attempts to give background into the historical practices, legislation, and recommended best practices for recording Finnish personal and place names. Documenting Every Emigrant is a work in progress and is aimed at preserving the record of emigrant names from Finland, particularly Swedish-speaking Finland.
